Role

Commissioning Engineer

Position
Barrett Woodyard & Associates (BW&A) is seeking a motivated Commissioning Engineer to join our growing Sustainability Studio. This role is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer or graduate with a strong technical foundation who is interested in building performance, energy efficiency, and sustainable design.
As a Commissioning Engineer, you will support the evaluation, testing, and optimization of building systems to help ensure they perform as intended and deliver long-term value to clients. Your work will contribute directly to energy efficiency, system reliability, and high-performing buildings across a range of project types.
We prefer candidates with an engineering background, particularly those with the technical ability to grow into conducting engineering studies, system assessments, and performance evaluations. Prior commissioning experience is not required. A candidate does not need to have worked in commissioning before—or even fully understand the discipline yet—but should bring sound engineering fundamentals, curiosity, problem-solving ability, and a willingness to learn.
This role offers strong opportunities for technical development, mentorship, career advancement, and long-term growth within a collaborative and expanding practice.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering field required; ABET-accredited curriculum preferred.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred, or willingness to obtain.
Industry certifications such as CCP, BCxP, CxA, LEED AP with specialty, or similar are a plus, or willingness to pursue over time.
Strong engineering and analytical skills, with interest in building systems, energy performance, and system optimization.
Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical plans, specifications, sequences of operation, and TAB reports.
Strong organizational and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and Bluebeam Revu.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams.
Detail-oriented, organized, and solutions-driven.
Familiarity with diagnostic and monitoring tools such as electrical multimeters, light meters, infrared scanners, and temperature/humidity meters is a plus.
Ability to travel up to 25%, primarily local and regional.
