Barrett, Woodyard & Associates, Inc. (BW&A) was founded in 1987 by Michael S. Barrett, P.E. and Charles L. Woodyard, Jr., P.E. to provide high-quality mechanical and electrical engineering services in the fields of HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, process piping, lighting design, power distribution, automatic controls, energy management and life safety systems.  Additional services include data/voice cabling systems, LEED certification services, building commissioning, forensic engineering, energy modeling, engineering analysis and due-diligence studies. BW&A strives to bring the highest level possible of technical expertise, professional involvement and individual commitment to each project undertaken.  Headquartered in Atlanta, BW&A opened a second office in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2003 and a third office in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2012.

The principals in the firm have over two hundred combined years of construction and design engineering experience and every staff engineer is a graduate mechanical or electrical engineer.  We have a staff of over 50 employees, including twenty-two (22) licensed professional engineers and fourteen (14) LEED Accredited professionals.  With thousands of successful projects, BW&A has been built on a reputation of quality and enjoys the resulting repeat business that comes with solid, professional engineering and a commitment to excellence.

BW&A has had the opportunity to design a large variety of project types.  Design experience includes, but is not limited to: corporate, data & high-volume call center, on-call tenant, industrial, commercial, medical, institutional, hospitality, retail, airport, religious, restaurant, financial, government, assisted living, auditorium, theater and lighting design. Additionally, BW&A has had the opportunity to design many LEED certified projects.

BW&A utilizes a studio concept with a strong team approach.  Each studio is comprised of a balance of mechanical and electrical engineers.  These engineers work closely together on each project, enabling effective communication and coordination between each of the disciplines.  Each studio is headed by a firm partner (also a registered professional engineer) thus ensuring that partner participation and guidance occurs with each project. We are confident that we have the talent and resources to properly staff any project.

BW&A employs a full time, onsite professional Information Technology manager. We have multiple onsite plotters and each engineer has unrestricted desktop internet access which assists in acquiring HVAC load calculations, lighting designs, short circuit studies, electrical load, life cycle and energy consumptions analysis.  BW&A maintains our own centralized accounting database for cost accounting and project tracking.  BW&A utilizes the latest version of AutoCAD and Revit, utilizing our in-house servers and PC network.
